About the Brand

Robyn Valerie is a creative brand, founded by Robyn Schumacher, specialising in the art of surface pattern design. We create original and bespoke patterns that are in turn used to create a variety of products – kitchen and homeware items, home décor and fashion accessories, and fabric and wallpaper printing. As well as creating a selection of in-house products, we have also had the fortune of partnering with a number of local businesses to fulfil our production needs.

The business launched in 2022 selling handmade aprons, hats, tea-towels, and tote bags all with our unique pattern designs. Additionally, we also landed our first licsensing deal with Robin Sprong Wallpaper in this year. (View our first collection with them here and our second collection here).

In September 2023 Robyn left her 9-5 and jumped into the business full time. We established a partnership with DSA Linen and grew our product offerings. In October 2024 we participated in our first Kamers Makers market in Stellenbosch, which was a huge success and we look forward to attending more shows in 2025. You will find us at the Blaauwklippen (Stellenbosch) market from 4-9 March and the St David's Marist market (Johannesburg) from 30 April - 4 May.

About Robyn

Hello and welcome! I’m Robyn, the founder and creative director at Robyn Valerie.

I graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2020 with a BA majoring in Classical studies and Business French, during which time I also taught piano lessons (and currently still do). Music has always been a special escape for me from the craziness of life. For as long as I can remember, I have always had a special interest in and been enthusiastic about history and European culture, especially anything and everything to do with France and Britain.

In 2021, I took a gap year, during which time I discovered pattern design and taught myself the skills I needed to become a surface designer. This journey started after I stumbled upon Spoonflower and felt inspired to create my own repeating patterns. I slowly taught myself how to do so by hand, and then eventually braved learning Photoshop. I joined Skillshare as a tool to advance my learning process and took a few of Bärbel Dressler's historical pattern style classes to help me create my first collection.

In 2022, I enrolled in Bonnie Christine’s Immersion class, which taught me many new skills and helped me grow in my knowledge as a designer and entrepreneur. I also landed an in-house design job at Robin Sprong Wallpapers in this year, which was a great opportunity and learning curve for me as someone new in the creative industry.

My style is heavily influenced by the likes of William Morris from the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as other historical pattern styles. I'm a huge fan of French and English country decor and love the romanticism of a royal court from Jane Austen's era. I aim to create beauty that has an elegance and sophistication that will stand the test of time. I hope that Robyn Valerie will be able to put a smile on your face while on my quest to accomplish this.

About Charlene

Hello, I’m Charlene, you could call me the founder of the founder.

My happy space is working with my hands - be it gardening, cooking, sewing, running my home, walking beside my husband and daughters and encouraging them - being productive and creative give me a spring in life.

I am originally a trained teacher and in the past 30 years, if not part-time teaching, I have been blessed to be an entrepreneur in the worlds of interior design, wedding planning, beauty therapy, cooking and recipe book writing, catering, deli owner, and a few other bits and bobs here and there.

The past five years have kept me busy with renovating and overseeing building alterations, planting a vineyard, establishing a magnificent English and food garden (in very challenging conditions), and coming on board to help Robyn establish and grow her entrepreneurial venture and business.

With her passion, artistic talent and desire for perfection along with my previous entrepreneurial experiences and ease in rapport with people, we make a strong and supportive mom and daughter team.

We share a taste and preference in elegant, sophisticated, timeless and classic style in both a home and fashion attire. With our combination of skills, talents, hard-working ethics and passion we aim to spark a desire for womanliness and refinement in both home and wardrobe.

I believe the way in which a person presents themselves and their home reflects their inner strength and character, and our goal in this business is to strengthen you from this perspective in the best way possible.
